Special attention will be given to the work of Langston Hughes, one of the defining figures of the period, and lyricist of Kurt Weil’s opera “Street Scene,” to be performed by the Teatro Real in February and May 2018. The class will draw on Hughes’ contribution to the opera, and thereby provide a rich complementary resource for those interested in attending the Teatro Real production.
Other authors that will be examined include W.E.B. DuBois, Zora Neal Hurston, Jean Toomer, Claude McKay, and others.
