A scholastic club for bi-cultural children
Fall 2010

Welcome to the International Institute in Spain!
Are you a bi-national family with children who speak Spanish and English? Do you wish that your children could learn more about their “American sides”? Sign them up for the “Kids’ Culture Club” and encourage their second-language reading, cultural background knowledge, and general knowledge of North American culture.

What is the Kids’ Culture Club?

The Kids’ Culture Club is a club for children ages 5 to 10, living in Madrid, who have one Spanish parent and one North American parent, and are bilingual Spanish-English speakers. We will meet one day a week, after school, and one Saturday a month.

Our mission is to provide children of bi-national families with the opportunity to further their knowledge of North American culture and language in a natural environment.

Who can join the Kids’ Culture Club?

The Kids’ Culture Club is a club for children ages 5 to 10, living in Madrid, who have one North American parent and who are bilingual Spanish-English speakers.

As stated above, our mission is to provide children of bi-national families with the opportunity to further their knowledge of North American culture and language in a natural environment. The International Institute is a cross-cultural institution in Madrid, founded 100 years ago, which preserves a mission of broadening knowledge and encouraging understanding between the cultures of Spain and the U.S./Canada. We believe that our mission starts at the earliest of ages.

What will our children do?

The Kid’s Club group will meet with a certified teacher for one hour during the week, and one Saturday a month for two hours. They will follow a program of activities linked with a common thread of American history and traditions. The activities will include reading, drawing, songs, etc, as well as special Saturday activities that will celebrate specific North American traditions (for example, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Independence Day, Black History Month, etc.).
The program will use authentic materials from elementary school classes in the U.S

How will our children benefit?

The International Institute in Spain is a wealth of cultural information for Spaniards and Americans living abroad. The “Kids’ Culture Club” will benefit the children of bi-nationals not only by expanding their knowledge and use of the English language, but also by incorporating extensive cultural background knowledge of the US that they otherwise would not experience in their schools in Madrid.
