American Cultural Studies: Political Campaigns and Elections

This 10-hour course will meet every two weeks to explore the dynamics of political campaigns and elections in the United States. We will consider the process of candidate selection, as well as campaign financing, media coverage, partisanship, voter decision-making, and identity politics. Particular attention will be paid to historically significant elections in the 20th and 21st century in order to better understand the stakes at play in the upcoming 2020 election.
This course is designed for learners with an upper-intermediate level of English.
Language skills developed include:
- Oral expression (through in-class discussion, debates and presentations)
- Writing (through in-class exercises and reaction papers)
- Listening and reading comprehension (through the analysis of film, journalism, political rhetoric and a variety of media sources.)
