This course explores the intersection of art and popular American culture in the 1960s and 70s. We will look at how commercial imagery, the mass media and celebrity culture influenced artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha, Robert Indiana and James Rosenquist.
Pop artists addressed the issues of their day, from the Civil Rights movement and feminism to the Vietnam War. This course coincides with the exhibition Warhol: The Mechanical Art at the CaixaForum in Madrid, which we will visit together as a class.
