In this 30-hour ACS course, for students with an upper-intermediate or advanced level of English, we will examine the genre of portraiture in North American art.
Portraiture is a genre that has always been in demand, in American art as elsewhere. In this course we will look at how the pretexts, the functions and the conventions of portraiture in the U.S. have evolved since the 17th century. Whether it is the likeness of an eminent public figure or a close friend of the artist, a portrait may communicate complex messages about gender, sexuality, race and social status.
We will touch on the work of many prominent artists, including John Singleton Copley, James McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, Cecilia Beaux, Thomas Eakins, Alfred Stieglitz, Andy Warhol, Robert Mapplethorpe, Alice Neel, Sally Mann, Amy Sherald and Kehinde Wiley.

El retrato es un género que siempre ha tenido demanda, tanto en el arte estadounidense como en otros lugares. En este curso estudiaremos cómo han evolucionado los pretextos, las funciones y las convenciones del retrato en Estados Unidos desde el siglo XVII. Ya se trate del retrato de un personaje público eminente o de un amigo íntimo del artista, un retrato puede comunicar mensajes complejos sobre el género, la sexualidad, la raza y el estatus social.
