Historic Election, One Year Ago

Just over a year ago, Americans were witnesses to a historic event: the election of the first African American President, Barack Obama. Politics aside, it was a significant and hopeful moment for the United States, and the world. Last year, our bilingual group, the Kids' Club, learned this poem by Langston Hughes to commemorate the event. We hope you like this poem. What do you think? I, Too, Sing America by Langston Hughes

I, too, sing America. I am the darker brother. They send me to eat in the kitchen When company comes, But I laugh, And eat well, And grow strong. Tomorrow, I'll be at the table When company comes. Nobody'll dare Say to me, "Eat in the kitchen," Then. Besides, They'll see how beautiful I am And be ashamed-- I, too, am America.
