“The Melancholic Loop: Stories of Basque Nationalists” by Jon Juaristi

“In 1997 The Melancholic Loop was published. Stories of Basque nationalists, by Jon Juaristi. The book had won the Espasa Hoy Prize in 1997 and would receive the National Essay Prize the following year. This last award recognized the merits of a work that, without a doubt, constitutes one of the most accomplished essays published in Spain in the last quarter of a century. A complex and polyhedral book, attractive and fascinating, full of wisdom and communicative capacity, of which several editions have already been made. Juaristi refers to this volume, in the last pages of his memoir, which has just seen the light of day at the Seix Barral publishing house, as “my personal vision of Basque nationalism”. The melancholic loop constitutes a real finishing touch to what we can call the Basque stage of Juaristi, although it could also be classified as the brilliant literary beginning of a new stage of the author, characterized by his progressive estrangement -exile, in reality, in a country that has experienced them constantly throughout its history and that continues to suffer from them, in the midst of democracy – in the Basque Country.”
