"The domains of the wolf” by Javier Marías
“Los dominios del lobo, 1971. The debut feature of the Madrid writer (written at the age of 18 in Rimbaud) was a stimulating and innovative addition to the Spanish novel of the early 70s. The work, which was praised by Juan Benet and Carlos Barral (who dedicated a prologue to it), was accused by some of being escapist, as it was not an engagée work, that is, it did not portray the Spain of the time, it did not contribute to the overthrow of the dictator, etc… despite such sins , is a fast-paced work (unlike the later, slow and philosophical Marías), whose reading today is interesting and enjoyable. Set in the United States and featuring American characters, its narrative speed will surprise readers familiar with the author's most recent works."
