"Manhattan, mixed use” edition by Lynne Cooke and Douglas Crimp with Kristin Poor

“The title Manhattan, Mixed Use alludes to neighborhoods or individual buildings in which a mix of commercial and residential functions has been permitted. In the early 1970s, the rezoning of certain sections of Lower Manhattan legalized a de facto situation in which artists had appropriated factory buildings in partially deindustrialized areas, to use them as studios and homes. This phenomenon had spawned a nascent art community, which soon gave rise to a network of restaurants close to artist-run galleries and performance spaces.”
