“A maritime city that looks like Genoa, a shady crime, an anonymous corpse, a man who undertakes a personal investigation to reveal his identity. But Spino's procedure, the detective in the story, does not follow a cause-effect logic. Instead of visible appearances, he searches for the meanings that these appearances contain, and his search runs along the ambiguous edge that separates the spectacle from the spectator."
