"The scholars to the violet" by José Cadalso

“The scholars in the violet (1772) is a brief and light satire against a type of education then frequent: the merely superficial erudition. The content and structure are clearly reflected in the subtitle given by its own author: "Complete course of all sciences, divided into seven lessons, for seven days a week, published as a gift for those who claim to know a lot by studying little." The title alludes to one of the perfumes, that of violet, preferred by young people in fashion. The work was an immediate success and the title became proverbial.”
