“Acquittal” by Luis Landero

Absolution

“After an erratic and unsatisfied life, Lino has finally managed to be a happy man. It is a Thursday in May, and a splendid future opens before him. On Sunday he will marry Clara, and today, in anticipation of that happy day, there will be a family meal. Everything therefore invites harmony and happiness. In the countdown to that morning, Lino recapitulates his past, since he found out in his adolescence that he lives in a hostile world, until, a few months ago, he went to work in a hotel and there he met Clara, and Mr. Levin, and a period began that would take him to this miraculous spring day. He walks confidently through Madrid, although from time to time he is assailed by disturbing omens. ”
