“Ali is eighteen years old, afraid of driving and afraid of falling in love. She has a mother, a neighbor, two friends, and Julio, the freaky fellow from the supermarket where she works. Ali smokes constantly. "Be wary of anything you can't do while smoking," says Ali. Since Ali smokes, her mother has had five boyfriends and five depressions. Ali is in love with Julio but it is easier for her to continue living in Ali's invulnerable country than to cross over to Alicia's country."
