The Family Book Club pairs food stories from the American children's literature with short “take home” recipes using food items and ingredients from the text used in each session. All “take home” recipes are from the United States, focusing on healthy sustainable eating.

during each Family Book Club session, families listen to and discuss a story with their child and the moderator, addressing topics and great ideas surrounding it. Families then return home with their “take home” recipes to engage in a family-focused activity with their child, trying new American dishes and addressing topics from the text.

Families and children complete family photo journals and recipe books to document their collaborative learning experiences and to share their journey with members of the ASM community. Don't forget to send us your experience testimonies and pictures to!


The Family Book Club connects stories from American children's literature with take-home recipes. Based on the chosen stories, the sessions will try to focus on aspects of a healthy and sustainable diet. The books in this cycle seek to introduce participants to uses, customs and foods that characterize American culture as well as gastronomic aspects of some festivities.

In each session of the Family Reading Club, families listen to and participate in the story of the month introduced by an American moderator, also addressing themes around the story. Then the recipe of the month and the tricks to make it will be explained. Participants try to do them as a family activity, trying new American dishes and addressing themes from the text.

With the testimonies received from the culinary experiences of the families, a recipe book will be created that documents their collaborative learning experiences and allows them to be shared with the rest of the members of the Espacio Americano community in Madrid.

Participant ages: 6 to 8 years old.

Activity in English with a little Spanish when necessary.

Hours: one Wednesday a month from 18:30 p.m. to 19:30 p.m. (new schedule from March to June) in the library of the International Institute.
