XXI Women's Colloquium Spain – USA: women documentary film directors.

The International Institute presents a new edition of the Colloquia de la Mujer. These colloquia They were born more than three decades ago as an instrument to analyze ideas and problems related to women's lives from the double Spanish and North American perspective.

The purpose of this year's Women's Colloquium is to bring together two eminent female film directors from the United States and Spain, whose production highlights the role of documentary film in today's society: Chus Gutiérrez (Spain) and Yael Melamede (United States ).

Simon Kilmurry, Executive Director of the International Documentary Association, has eloquently stated “in this age of alternate facts” (alternative facts) … we have an even greater need for stories about the experience of real-world people brought to us by courageous female documentary filmmakers.”

The documentaries by Chus Gutiérrez and Yael Melamede fulfill this task by addressing complex social issues through the eyes and voices of people who share their experiences and stories and who, implicitly, lead the public to reflect critically on their words.

With mastery and concern for aesthetic and ethical values, Chus Gutiérrez examines the complexity of society and the cultural shifts seen through the gypsy community of Sacromonte in Granada. In his documentary (Dis)honesty: The Truth about Lies (2015), Yael Melamede explores a different kind of displacement – ​​one that operates on the truth and lies that permeate all layers of society.

the two movies, sacromonte (2014) and (dis)honesty (2015), will be screened at the International Institute prior to the Colloquium on June 13 and 14. see here the dates and times of these projections.

In addition to the screenings, the two filmmakers will share their views on the role of documentaries in today's society: their experiences as directors, screenwriters, producers, actresses, as well as their challenges as female filmmakers in an industry dominated by men.

The two directors have received numerous awards. Gutiérrez has been honored for her work as a director at the Valladolid, Cairo and Guadalajara International Film Festivals, and has been nominated for several Goyas. Among Melamede's films are  Innocent, winner of the Film Academy Award for Best Documentary; When I walk, Emmy winner in 2015; desert runners, winner of multiple awards in the US as well as in the rest of the world; Y My Architectt, nominated by the Film Academy in 2014.
