Special programming at the Institute on the occasion of the US elections

This year's election has been characterized as unprecedented from the beginning. In order to understand the nuances of this election and recognize its oddities, a general understanding of the US election system is required. The US has not seen an electoral race this close since the 1960s and it is impossible to predict the outcome. For this reason, this year's election has everyone paying close attention.
The Institute held a public screening of the major presidential debates on the day following the televised events in the US. These events were facilitated by Democrats Abroad. The first presidential debate of 2024 took place on Thursday, June 27 between former president Donald Trump and current president, former candidate, Joe Biden. The second presidential debate occurred on Tuesday, September 10th between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, (current vice president). The first debate between the vice presidential candidates, JD Vance and Tim Walz, occurred Tuesday, October 1.
If you missed these debates, we have several more events to look forward to that will help to facilitate a better understanding of US current events, specifically relating to this year's presidential campaign.
On Tuesday, October 8th we launch the first session of a film cycle on the theme of US elections with Sibley Labandeira. «Mr. Smith Goes to Washington» (Frank Capra, 1939) (known as ”Caballero sin espada” in Spanish), a drama mixed with comedy, will be the first of the films and screened in English with Spanish subtitles. On Monday October 14th the second film in the cycle is "All the King's Men" (Robert Rossen, 1949) known as "The politician" in Spanish). The third and final film in our series is «Born Yesterday (George Cukor, 1950) (known as «Born Yesterday» in Spanish), to be screened on Monday October 21st. The films all deal with themes such as the electoral system, democratic ideals and the danger of political corruption. The film cycle is free and open to the public, facilitated by Sibley in Spanish and English.
On Wednesday Oct. 9th, international relations and media expert Alana Moceri will give a talk in Spanish on the influence the media is having on the current presidential election. Media consumption has the power to influence the opinions of voters and is an important factor in this year's election. The talk will discuss these effects of media trends such as polarized media consumption and misinformation.
We also have a special ACS mini-course with law professor Adam Dubin to discuss «Human Rights Issues at the Heart of US Elections» from Oct 23 to Nov 06. You can learn about the implications the outcome of the 2024 presidential election will have on human rights. This mini-course is designed for anyone with interest in exploring human rights and socio-legal issues in the United States.
Finally, on November 4th, the evening before the official voting day in the US, we welcome political science and sociology professor, Robert M. Fishman (Universidad Carlos III) to give a talk entitled «On the Eve of History: The Extraordinary Election of 2024».
