Silver and Gold: Hollywood's Fascination with Blondes

This 6-week, 18-hour course is designed for learners with at least an upper-intermediate level of English.
This course explores Hollywood's obsession with blonde women. Whether it was the fact that in the era of black-and-white films blondes photographed better or that the larger culture held a fascination with these fair-haired sirens, there is no disputing blondes have had a determining presence on the silver screen.
We will examine character archetypes seen in classic films, as well as the actresses that embodied them, from angelic Mary Pickford and her golden locks to sex icon Marilyn Monroe and her platinum bob. Together with Pickford and Monroe, we will look into the careers and lives of actresses like Jean Harlow, Grace Kelly, Judy Holiday, Lana Turner, Veronica Lake, and Doris Day, to understand how they were so much more than their sassy and brassy, cool and chic, or ditzy and charming on-screen personas.
We will also look at specific film directors, such as Alfred Hitchcock, and how they elaborated and perpetuated myths around the ideal of the mysterious blonde. We will see how in some movies hair color is just another glamorous feature of these striking women (Rear Window, North by Northwest), while in others it is a crucial part of the plot (Vertigo), and in others it determines the color pallet some of the film's key scenes (Gentlemen Prefer Blondes).

Este curso explorará la obsesión de Hollywood por las mujeres rubias. Examinaremos distintos arquetipos vistos en películas clásicas, así como las actrices que los encarnaron, desde la angelical Mary Pickford y sus rizos dorados hasta el icono sexual Marilyn Monroe y su bob platino. Además de Pickford y Monroe, nos adentraremos en la carrera y la biografía de actrices como Jean Harlow, Grace Kelly, Judy Holiday, Lana Turner, Veronica Lake y Doris Day, para dar cuenta de la complejidad de estas estrellas de cine, siendo todas ellas mucho más que los personajes descarados y deslenguados, chic y distantes o atolondrados y encantadores que interpretaban en pantalla.
También analizaremos la obra de directores concretos, cuyos filmes elaboraron y perpetuaron el mito de la rubia misteriosa. Veremos cómo en algunas películas el color de pelo no es más que otra característica glamurosa de estas mujeres epatantes (La ventana indiscreta, Con la muerte en los talones), mientras que en otras es un elemento crucial de la trama (Vértigo), y en otras llega a determinar la paleta de colores de algunas de las escenas emblemáticas de la historia del cine (Los caballeros las prefieren rubias).
