En The New Yorker (June 2, 2021)
After decades of hiding feminine impulses, a renowned dancer comes out to challenge convention by pursuing his love of flamenco – dressed as a woman – in a conservative society with rigid cultural traditions.
released by The New Yorker in celebration of Pride Month 2021, “Flamingo Queer” is a revelatory short documentary in which Manuel Liñán shares his moving personal story of secrecy, struggle and eventual triumph.
Filmmakers Ana González and Frederick Bernas were given unfettered access to both Liñán's family and his controversial “VIVA!!” project – an autobiographical performance featuring a group of men who bare their cross-dressing tendencies for all to see.
The film mixes vérité, scripted scenes and fictional elements in a hybrid approach partially inspired by Liñán's fluid view of gender. It was independently produced by Eye Rise Films – an audiovisual studio born during the first lockdown in London – before receiving support from the Pulitzer Center.
At a time when gender self-determination is being publicly debated in Spain and beyond, “Flamenco Queer” stands out from a plethora of pandemic documentaries by exploring how concepts of identity will continue to evolve in a post-Covid society.
