To commemorate Native American Heritage Month, we invite you to a screening of the documentary film, “The Medicine Game.”
“The Medicine Game” (Lukas Korver, 2013, 70 min): OV in English with subtitles in Spanish.
In the heart of New York State is the Onondaga Nation, a Native American community famous for being the birthplace of some of the best lacrosse players in the world. However, reluctance to leave the community, drug use and poverty have kept many of those players from daring to leave the reserve to enter the college or professional league.
The Medicine Game, Made over seven years, it chronicles the extraordinary journey of two siblings, Hiana and Jeremy Thompson, who hope to break that trend. They are driven by a single goal: to beat adversity and play lacrosse for Syracuse University, a national power in the sport. The obstacles are many and daunting, but both brothers' love of the sport and their family's steadfast determination push them towards their dream.
The Medicine Game participated in the Sebastopol Documentary Film Festival, the Salem Film Festival, the Vision Maker Film Festival, and the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival (where it won best sports film), and won a Cinema Golden Eagle Award in 2013.
