“Nanomaterials to fight infections and cancer”
SPEAKER: Dr. José Miguel García Martín
José Miguel García-Martín (Madrid, 1972) studied Physical Sciences at the Complutense University of Madrid, where he also obtained his doctorate with a thesis on magnetic nanowires and microtubes that he did at the Institute of Applied Magnetism. He then moved to the Laboratory of Physics of Solids at the University of Paris South (France) with a Marie Curie individual scholarship, where he worked for almost three years on magnetic force microscopy. He joined the Madrid Institute of Microelectronics (IMM) in 2003 with a "Ramón y Cajal" type contract, and in 2006 he obtained a position as Senior Scientist of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC). In the summer of 2017 IMM changed its name to the Institute of Micro and Nanotechnology, where García-Martín is a Scientific Researcher at the CSIC and Head of the Department of Fabrication and Characterization of Nanostructures.
His research work has focused on the study of different nanostructures (nanoparticles, nanocolumns, multilayers and nanostructured thin films) with applications in various fields. In magnetism, for information storage systems, spin electronics and sensors. In plasmonics, for active devices, plasmon resonance sensors and substrates for Raman spectroscopy. And in the field of biomedicine, for antibacterial coatings for implants, nanoelectrodes for cell stimulation and anticancer nanostructures.
He has led more than ten national and international projects, including Development of a detector for cell abnormalities associated with cancer (i-COOP+2018), Electrical stimulation with nanostructured electrodes (NeuPES-H2020) and Nanoimplant, which won the IDEA²Madrid Award (awarded by a consortium formed by the Community of Madrid and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT). In 2017 he was a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the Northeastern University Nanomedicine Laboratory (Boston, USA).
In addition to his research work, he is involved in outreach activities such as scientific photography contests (where he has received several awards), talks for high school students and the Nanofestival, where he co-directs two events: a Nano-story literary contest for young people and science-fiction film screenings with talk shows. She has written articles for El Mundo and for various blogs, and has also participated in three free popular books: "SCIENCE, and I also understand it !!!" (2017), “SCIENCE, and I want to be a scientist!!!” (2018) and “SCIENCE, and a great step for humanity!!!” (2019).
