Jesse Schneider, nuestro profesor de cursos de preparación SAT, nos ha respondido a algunas preguntas sobre el SAT y los cursos SAT en el Instituto. Jesse es licenciado en periodismo y español por New York University además de ser profesor acreditado de inglés para extranjeros.
What does SAT mean?
The acronym SAT used to stand for Scholastic Aptitude Test, but many people believed that this was a misnomer as the test really only measures specific aptitudes. To avoid this controversy, the College Board eliminated the original acronym and now the acronym SAT doesn’t stand for anything.
¿Qué quiere decir SAT?
Las siglas SAT antes significaban ¨Scholastic Aptitude Test¨ (Examen de aptitudes académicas), pero mucha gente creía que el nombre no tenía sentido porque el examen solo medía ciertas aptitudes. Para evitar la polémica, el College Board eliminó el significado de las siglas originales y hoy en día las siglas SAT no significan nada.
Who should think about taking the SAT?
Typically, a student takes the SAT once in the spring of his or her junior year and a second time in the fall of his or her senior year. Studies have shown that students improve if they take the test a second time. I strongly recommend beginning preparation before the start of one’s junior year in order to be ready to take the test either that fall or the following January.
¿Quién debería pensar en presentarse al SAT?
El alumno típico se presenta al SAT en la primavera de su penúltimo año del instituto (primero de bachillerato) y otra vez en el otoño de su último año en el instituto (segundo de bachillerato). Los estudios demuestran que los estudiantes que se vuelven a presentar al examen generalmente mejoran sus notas. Recomiendo que los alumnos empiecen a estudiar para el SAT el verano antes de entrar en primero de bachillerato para estar preparados para presentarse al examen en ese otoño o en el enero siguiente.
What are the different parts of the SAT?
The SAT is divided into three parts and ten sections.
The Critical Reading component is made up of multiple choice questions that test students’ vocabulary knowledge and several passages followed by questions that test students’ reading comprehension. The Math component includes a variety of topics that students typically study in school. However, the test does NOT have any questions about trigonometry or calculus. The Writing component includes a 25 minute essay in which students must respond to a short prompt. Additionally, there are a range of multiple choice questions that test students’ grammatical knowledge.
¿Cuáles son las partes distintas del SAT?
El SAT se divide en tres partes y diez secciones. La parte de lectura se compone de varias preguntas de “opción múltiple” que miden el nivel de vocabulario del alumno y varios textos seguidos de preguntas (también de “opción múltiple”) que evalúan la habilidad de lectura y comprensión del estudiante. La parte matemática se caracteriza por una variedad de preguntas sobre diversos temas pero NO incluye ni trigonometría ni cálculo. En la parte de escritura, el estudiante tiene 25 minutos para desarrollar un trabajo escrito sobre un tema determinado. Además, hay varias preguntas de “opción múltiple” que evalúan los conocimientos gramaticales del estudiante.
Which part do students find the most difficult?
In my experience, students generally struggle most with the critical reading section. This section requires students to have a very ample vocabulary and to be able to read and understand a myriad of topics at a very rapid rate.
¿Cuál es la parte del examen que a los estudiantes más les cuesta?
En mi experiencia, la parte del examen que a los estudiantes más les cuesta es la parte de lectura. En esa parte, los alumnos deben entender muy bien un rango amplio de vocabulario y leer y comprender muy rápidamente un gran abanico de temas.
Can a student prepare to take the SAT on his or her own? If so, what should he or she do?
A student can prepare the test on his or her own. In this case, the student should buy an SAT prep book, take several practice exams under timed conditions, and make sure to familiarize him or herself with difficult vocabulary, relevant math concepts, and basic grammar rules.
¿Es posible que un alumno se prepare el SAT por su cuenta? En caso afirmativo, ¿cómo se lo prepara?
Sí, se puede preparar el SAT por su cuenta. En este caso, recomiendo que el estudiante compre un libro de preparación y que haga muchos exámenes de práctica en las condiciones del examen real. Además, hay que familiarizarse con el vocabulario más difícil, las matemáticas más relevantes y las normas básicas de la gramática.
What can younger middle school (ESO students) do to prepare them to take the SAT in a few years’ time?
First of all, I strongly advise ESO students to start thinking about the SAT. In my opinion, the best way to prepare for the SAT is to read in English as much as possible. This will help students to bolster their vocabularies and become more at ease with reading both quickly and efficiently in English. For students who don’t enjoy books, I strongly recommend the newspapers The Guardian and The New York Times and the magazines The New Yorker and The Economist.
¿Qué se puede hacer en la ESO para prepararse el SAT con antelación?
Ante todo, me parece muy bien que los estudiantes empiecen a pensar en el SAT con antelación. Opino que la mejor manera de preparase es leer en inglés todo lo posible. De esta manera, el alumno incrementará su vocabulario y estará más cómodo leyendo tanto rápida como eficazmente en inglés. Para los que no disfrutan de leer libros, recomiendo los periódicos The Guardian y The New York Times y las revistas The New Yorker y The Economist.
When does the new SAT come into effect? How will it be different to the current exam?
The new SAT will come into effect in January of 2016. There are some big changes in store for students who will take this exam, such as an optional essay rather than the current mandatory essay and questions that are designed to prepare students for the ¨real world¨. What is the most important advice you give to students preparing to take the SAT?
I know I’ve said it before in this entry, but it bears repeating: read! In my experience, students who read tend to much better on the exam. In the math and writing sections, the test makers include a fairly limited range of concepts that can be learned through diligent studying. However, students who are not accustomed to reading will struggle to comprehend a wide range of texts in a very limited amount of time, which is the precise situation the test taker will encounter in the critical reading section.
¿Cuál es el consejo más importante que darías a los estudiantes que se preparan el SAT?
Sé que este consejo ya lo he mencionado antes en este texto, pero merece la pena repetirlo: ¡leer! En mi experiencia, los estudiantes que leen sacan mejores notas en el examen que los que no. En las partes de matemática y escritura, quienes crean el examen incluyen un rango de temas bastante limitados, los cuales se pueden aprender estudiando mucho. Sin embargo, el alumno que no está acostumbrado a leer tendrá problemas en comprender un rango amplio de textos en un tiempo muy limitado, y ésta es la situación a la que se enfrentará el día del examen.
What is your experience in preparing students for the SAT? What else do you teach? How long have you been in Spain?
I have been living in Spain for the past five years and have been preparing students for the SAT for that long as well. I also teach general English and mathematics to children and adults.
¿Cuantos años de experiencia tienes como profesor de SAT? ¿Das clase de otras materias? ¿Cuánto tiempo llevas en España?
Llevo cinco años viviendo en España y llevo el mismo tiempo preparando estudiantes para el SAT. También doy clase de inglés general y matemáticas a niños y adultos.
