The Great American Novel: The MovieGoer | Instituto Internacional

10 weeks · 20 hours · Upper-Intermediate+ English

Join us in exploring Walker Percy’s classic novel The Moviegoer (1961), a landmark of American literature. Through close readings and lively discussions, we’ll examine themes of “everydayness” and “the search,” place the novel in dialogue with mid‑century works like Rebel Without a Cause, Howl, and On the Road, and uncover its Southern Gothic roots.

Students will strengthen speaking and writing skills, gain cultural and historical insights, and build confidence with English and literature.

From Jesse James and Bonnie & Clyde to the legends of the Old West, we’ll examine how these rebels became symbols of freedom and resistance. 3. Landscape and American Art

8 weeks · 12 hours · Upper-Intermediate+ English

This course explores how artists across North America have interpreted and transformed the natural world from the early 19th century to the present. Through painting, photography, land art, public art, and contemporary environmental practices, the landscape has served not only as a source of beauty but also as a stage for storytelling, commemoration, spiritual reflection, social critique, and ecological awareness.

We will study works ranging from the Hudson River School and 19th‑century expedition painters to Indigenous perspectives, modernist reinterpretations, and contemporary artists addressing climate change.

Instructor: Kae Newcomb
