“That Obscure Object of Desire is the last of the films directed by Luis Buñuel. It is a very free adaptation of the novel by Pierre Louys La mujer y el pelele (La femme et le pantin) and a Franco-Spanish co-production.
In this, his latest film, Buñuel once again shows with a corrosive sense of humor all the frustration that unshared love represents and the weight that Christian education and bourgeois society have in our world. The best example of this frustration is in the symbol that Conchita's lingerie represents, which goes from being an erotic object to being transformed into an indestructible chastity belt."
