"Laughing Thing” by William Saroyan

“Evan Nazarenus, a university professor of Armenian origin, takes his family to spend time at his brother's country house in Clovis, California. After a long absence due to work, he wants to resume his relationship with Swan, his wife, and get closer to their young children, Red and Eva, for whom entering the diaphanous joy of childhood will bear the imprint of ripe figs and vineyards to the sun. But if the idyllic Californian summer offers the ultimate happiness on earth, the sudden revelation of a betrayal sends the Nazarenus family to the brink of hell.
