"The Prince" by Niccolò Machiavelli
Machiavelli should be credited with the discovery - we can call him that - of the possibility of a policy, and therefore of an autonomous political science, independent of the old general principles and apart from considerations of a moral order. This science is guided by motivations as specific as utility, value, "virtue" -a polyvalent term that stems from the Latin "virtus"-, strength and cunning, fortune and audacity."
