How did American music evolve from ragtime and jazz to rock, soul, and hip-hop? This course explores the rich history of American music and its powerful connection to culture, identity, and social change. Through music, film, historical sources, and engaging discussions, participants will discover how artists and musical movements have shaped—and been shaped by—the American experience.
From the birth of uniquely American musical traditions to the global influence of contemporary genres, we will examine the sounds, stories, and social forces behind America’s most influential music. No previous musical knowledge is required—just curiosity and a love of music.
This course explores the history and cultural significance of American music from its roots to the present day, or
more specifically, from Ragtime to Hip-Hop and its many variations. We will approach learning the musical history
of the United States regionally and chronologically, beginning with the nineteenth century break from purely
European traditions and underscoring the influences that created a unique American sound. Through a content-
based approach, we will study influential genres, artists, and musical movements to examine how music has
shaped and reflected American society. Learners will be given many opportunities to engage in intellectually
stimulating discussions based on short reading assignments and textual analysis of songs. Classroom activities will
prompt an examination of the relationship between music and social change, the role of race and ethnicity in the
development of American musical traditions, and the ways in which artists have responded to political, economic,
and cultural challenges. Drawing on music, film, literature, the press and historical sources, the course investigates
how musical expression has contributed to broader conversations about identity, equality, and national culture.
By the end of the course, participants will have gained a deeper understanding of the diverse traditions that have
shaped American music and the important role music continues to play in American cultural life.
