More than a story about a whale, Moby-Dick is a window into American history, culture, and imagination. In this four-session course, we will explore the world of 19th-century New England and the American whaling industry, the unforgettable characters of Captain Ahab and Ishmael, Spain’s ties to North and South America, and enduring themes of obsession, ambition, race, freedom, and humanity’s relationship with nature. We will also examine how Moby-Dick has continued to influence American art, music, film, and popular culture, including the surprising connection to Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. The course will conclude with a special session featuring internationally recognized Melville scholar Dr. Wyn Kelley, who will share her expertise on Melville, Moby-Dick, American whaling, race, and American culture, followed by a discussion and Q&A. No previous knowledge of Moby-Dick is required.
