Explore the evolution of American entrepreneurship from early industrialization to modern tech disruption, while comparing the cultural significance of business in the United States to Spanish cultural norms and market dynamics. Participants examine how differing cultural attitudes toward risk, failure, and hierarchy shape business outcomes.
8-Week Course
What is American Entrepreneurship and Why Does it Matter?
This course examines entrepreneurship as a cultural narrative in American society, highlighting how self-made innovators have evolved from the Industrial Revolution to the Silicon Valley era. In a lively, discussion based class, students will explore how startup and entrepreneurial culture reflects and reshapes American values around risk-taking, individualism, and social mobility, while analyzing case studies of entrepreneurs who have influenced different aspects of American society.
Movies that show how the integration of this spirit effected the American psyche from “Death of a Salesman” on will be part of this subject.
We will see how the concept of American entrepreneurship evolved in Spain. How has it influenced your work? Your field? What aspects of it worry you? What aspects feel compelling?
You will gain oral fluency and broad vocabulary in business English as well as analytic language to discuss entrepreneurship knowledgably.
As a final project the class will work collectively to produce a case study of Spanish entrepreneurism in an industry we will all choose.
