Science fiction films create imaginary worlds filled with alien creatures, advanced technologies, and distant futures — yet these fantastical settings often reflect very real cultural anxieties, fears, and desires. From Cold War paranoia to contemporary concerns about artificial intelligence and identity, sci-fi has long served as a mirror for society.
This course explores how women’s roles in science fiction filmmaking have evolved over the past seventy years, both on screen and behind the camera. We will begin by examining the diverse portrayals of female characters in classic and contemporary films — from nurturing mothers and rational mediators to powerful heroines, seductive “monsters,” visionary scientists, and complex anti-heroes.
At the same time, we will analyze the deeper cultural meanings these characters embody or challenge:
Fear of foreign invasion and the “unknown other”
Anxiety about nuclear destruction
Questions about reality versus simulation
Existential dilemmas sparked by rapid technological progress
Shifting ideas about gender, authority, and power
As the course progresses, we will turn our attention to authorship and creative control. How do these narratives shift when a woman directs, writes, or produces the film? Do themes, character arcs, and visual storytelling change? Or do they reproduce familiar patterns?
To address these questions, we will focus especially on science fiction films from the past twenty years created by women filmmakers, placing them in dialogue with earlier works in the genre.
Through close analysis, discussion, and contextual study, students will gain a deeper understanding of how science fiction cinema both shapes and reflects evolving ideas about gender, identity, and cultural power.
