The International Institute and the American Space Madrid will host our second “Community Coffee Talk” with parents and community members, “Techniques for Literacy Development: A Parent’s Guide.” The talk will take place over coffee in the library and will be facilitated by Sara Durnan, a teacher from IIE who works with students of all ages. She will be introduced by Ana Alonso, one of our librarians at the International Institute.
The talk will focus mostly on reading and strategies for younger (primary-age) children. She will talk about different literacy development techniques, including shared reading, guided reading and close reading, which help children gain a deeper understanding of texts and develop higher order thinking skills. We’ll discuss what parents can do at home to help their children become better readers and achieve higher levels of comprehension. Also, we will look at some online resources that aid in literacy development.
The Community Coffee Talks series has been organized to share trends from the fields of education and language learning with members of the International Institute and American Space Madrid community.
