Inspired by the mission and vision of the American Community Gardening Association (ACGA), the Garden Project at American Space Madrid will focus on the creation of an urban garden on-site at the International Institute. The urban garden will be a space for community members to engage in bilingual language exchanges, showcase American art and films, participate in ASM events, and grow healthy food. Beginning in February 2017, participants will engage in a variety of learning experiences focusing on garden design, community gardening and sustainability that will culminate in the design and construction of the American Space Community Garden at the International Institute in the spring of 2017. Throughout the course of the winter months, participants will compare and analyze American models of community gardens, including New York City’s Clinton Community Garden, leading to the development of an urban garden at the fourth floor café or in the open garden at the IIE.
The second phase of the project will begin in April 2017, focusing on planting, observation and analysis, and taking care of the garden. Through all phases of the project, participants will complete garden journals and Instagram stories.
