Join us for a public conversation and Q&A with Dr. Kelley and our English Department professor, Michael Engle, immediately following the final ACS course session.

Drawing on Moby-Dick, Benito Cereno, and other works, she will explore the fascinating connections between Melville, Spain, Latin America, race, empire, revolution, and the Atlantic world. Together, we will consider how Melville’s works continue to speak to questions of identity, power, cultural encounter, and the legacies of empire. The event will include time for audience questions.
Join us for a month of literary adventure, thought-provoking discussion, and classic cinema, culminating in conversations with one of today’s most distinguished American literature scholars.

Dr. Wyn Kelley is Professor Emerita at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and one of the world’s leading scholars of Herman Melville and Moby-Dick. An internationally renowned author, researcher, and lecturer, she has devoted decades to the study of American literature, whaling culture, race, and the Atlantic world. Her publications and teaching have made her a leading authority in Melville studies worldwide.

Michael Engle is a professor specializing in American cultural studies, literature, and film history. His approach combines sociopolitical analysis of the United States with its major artistic milestones, from nineteenth-century novels to the cinematic revolutions of New Hollywood. He is teaching at the Instituto Internacional part of the American Cultural Studies courses.
