“Whale of a Tale” at the International Institute!
This month the IIE is proud to celebrate a series of activities in honor of the 175th anniversary of Melville’s monumental novel Moby Dick!
We are especially excited to have Dr. Wyn Kelley with us to share her expertise on the story of Captain Ahab and the whale and its connections to the history of American culture and society!
Dr. Kelley is an Emerita Professor of literature at MIT, and one of the world’s leading experts in Melville.

Moby Dick: A Window into America. October 13 – November 13, 5-7pm
Join us for a glimpse at the history of America. Each week we’ll look at a brief, digestible selection from Melville’s novel that will serve as a window onto vital questions of American history and culture.

Join us for a screening of the classic film starring Gregory Peck, including a conversation with Dr. Michael Engle, expert in American literary studies who will help us unpack this most important film about Captain Ahab and the Whale.

Screening of the film Star Trek II: the Wrath of Khan (Nicholas Meyer, 1982). October 26, 6-8pm.
Dr. Wyn Kelley will set the stage for us to think about the profound influence Melville has had across literature, film, and culture. This amazing installment in the Star Trek franchise is deeply inspired by the story of Ahab and the Whale! We’ll follow the screening with some brief Q&A with Dr. Kelley.

The Weight of Empire: Melville and the Hispanic World – A Conversation with Wyn Kelley. November 3, 7-8pm.
Dr. Kelley explores the legacy of Moby Dick and asks how Melville’s work can help us think about the shared histories of the US, Spain, and Latin America, and the entanglement of race, empire, and revolution in the Atlantic world.
