This mini-course will explore the evolution of Chinatown, how it began as an ethnic enclave, a place where recent Chinese immigrants were forced to live, and how it has become a socio-political center, a place where Chinese Americans choose to live, work and shop. We will also look at how Chinatown is marketed to non-Chinese and how this business strategy both contributes to and challenges stereotypes.
Through analyzing a variety of texts and media, from short stories, poetry, non-fiction and drama, from film excerpts to visual images, students will become more knowledgeable about American history while at the same time improving their English skills.
This course has five sessions: April 10, 17, 24 and May 8 and 22.
Instructor: Tracy Wood, Ph.D.
