Open Session: American Cultural Studies

Sign up and learn about our American Cultural Studies Program (ACS) and the courses it offers (American Art History, American Expression and American Literature). Teachers will explain the objective of the course and its content for the Winter term of 2018, as well as answer questions about their classes.

For students with Advanced or Proficiency level:

Playwriting Workshop for Adults: Students will learn the basics of playwriting in which they will create sets, bring complex characters to life, and receive feedback on their own writing from other writers and a professional stage manager.
Contemporary American Short Stories: The focus for this course will be the emerging genre “Fabulism” and its unique ability to express the reality of the contemporary American experience.
American Art History: Landscape and American Art: Students will explore the ways that artists have responded to the natural environment in the United States and Canada from the turn of the last century to the present.
Page to Stage: We will explore the production of the opera "Dead Man Walking" that the Teatro Real premieres in January 2018, as an adaptation and also as an original work.

American Expression: Liberty 2.0: Religious Freedom: This quarter we will revisit the concept of Liberty and examine the theme of religious liberty in the history and culture of the United States.
The Great American Novel: To Kill a Mockingbird: The class will read the complete works of Harper Lee and will meet every other week to discuss the work.
S. Ethnic Writing: What are the terms of ethnicity in the US and what are their individual, community and national interests? How do race, class, gender, and sexuality influence the writing and reading of these texts? What is at stake in the creation of "alternative" American literary traditions? These are some of the questions we will consider throughout this 10-week course.
