This March, on the occasion of “women's month”, we pay tribute to a great Hollywood comedian: Mae West.
Join us on Friday, March 22 for a screening of I'm no angel (Wesley Ruggles), a 1933 romantic comedy written by and starring her. West is known for her suggestive humor and for this film she wrote and delivered some of her best lines.
Mae West stars in and writes this irreverent comedy released in the midst of the economic depression. Equal parts funny and controversial, West is unique in 30s Hollywood. Her brash characters and sharp scripts drove censors crazy and delighted an audience in need of humor.
After a successful career in the world of theater, he made the leap to cinema at almost forty years old, something practically unheard of for the time. He would end up making few films, but the impact they had was enormous. Among them stands out “I'm no angel.", being the second time that he stars in his own script and that he collaborates with a young Cary Grant after Lady Lou ( "She Done Him “Wrong”, Lowell Sherman, 1933). In both we see how the tandem formed by West and Grant is pure magic, the combination of her mischief and mischief with his elegance and charm made them absolute blockbusters.
There are those who say that “I am not an angel" It is a metaphor for West's life, that the ascension of Tira, the lion tamer protagonist, is that of her interpreter. Tira is able to put her head in the jaws of a big cat and come out unscathed, she is able to turn a trial around and put all of her accusers in her place and she is able to fight for it. that she wants without feeling guilty. What we have in the film and in the figure of Mae West is a liberated, ambitious and in control woman, who at the same time is all heart. But make no mistake, neither Tira nor Mae West are any angels.

This March, in honor of Women's History Month, we celebrate a great Hollywood comedian: Mae West. Join us on Friday, March 15th for a screening of I'm No Angel, a 1933 romantic comedy written by and starring Mae West. West is famous for her sexually suggestive humor, and for this film she wrote and delivered some of her very best lines.
Mae West wrote and starred in this irreverent Depression era comedy, which shows how unique West was in 1930s Hollywood. Her sassy characters and whip-smart quips made her a favorite among American audiences and the bane of the censors.
After a successful career in vaudeville and theatre, West was drawn to Hollywood in his late thirties, which was practically unheard of at the time. She was in just a dozen movies, but their impact is far reaching. Among these movies, I'm No Angel stands out. It was her second script of hers to be produced and the second time she shared the screen with a young Cary Grant, after She Done Him Wrong (Lowell Sherman, 1933). In both films, West and Grant prove to be a magical pairing; the combination of West's sass and Grant's charm made the films huge box-office successes and instant classics.
Some argue that I'm No Angel is a metaphor for West's life – that the ascension of Tira, the lion tamer, parallels that of the actress. Tira dominates large, fierce felines, turns a courtroom upside down when her character is questioned, and fights for what she wants without guilt or shame. What we have in the film, and in the person of Mae West, is a woman who is sexually liberated, ambitious, and in control, who at the same time has a heart of gold. But make no mistake…neither Tira nor Mae West are angels.
