"Devouring Paris: Picasso 1900-1907” by Marilyn McCully

“In the autumn of 1900, about to turn nineteen, Pablo Picasso traveled to Paris to visit the Universal Exhibition and live his first experience in the artistic capital of the world. After a few months, he exhibited at the prestigious Vollard gallery, while becoming familiar with the bohemian neighborhood of Montmartre and its worldly pleasures. Seven years later, he was competing with Matisse for the leadership of the French avant-garde and embarking on his revolutionary journey as a universal artist. This catalog analyzes Picasso's discovery of art and life in the capital of the Seine, and examines his reaction to specific artists, such as Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Steinlen, Puvis de Chavannes, Rodin and Cézanne. ”
