"The long journey” by Jorge Semprún

“The year is 1943. In a narrow sealed freight car, one hundred and twenty deportees cross French lands on their way to the concentration camp. It is a claustrophobic, vexatious journey: the crowded bodies fall from exhaustion, one loses count of the days one has been there, and one does not even know where or when it will end. And yet, sometimes, a simple word spoken by a colleague awakens all kinds of memories, hardly the only thing that remains in those moments.”
