"Subjects of a counter-discourse: an intellectual history of gay, lesbian and queer in Spain" by Laurentino Velez-Pelligrini

The experience of the pandemic and the homophobic resurgence that it gave rise to provoked a forceful political response from a whole generation of gay and lesbian activists who became involved in the fight against AIDS in the 90s, especially through of innovative radical warp movements, of which Act Up-New York and Act Up-Paris were the two most emblematic expressions. Alongside political action, Gays and Lesbian's Studies and queer theories emerged in the university sphere, producing an extraordinary capacity for intellectual, theoretical and academic reflection. This especially in what refers to the cultural criticism of the systems of representation of the disease, of bodies, of sex, of sexualities and of gender. To what extent did all these political movements and academic currents find an echo in Spain? Contrary to the myths about our supposed "backwardness", the author maintains the thesis that there has been a very honorable intellectual reception of all the great theoretical innovations that have occurred in the United States, Great Britain or France around the LGBT and queer issue. This essay deals with the origins and evolution of this theoretical production in our country.
